ASSIGNMENT 4 (Module 2)

In "Shooting an Elephant", Orwell states, "I did not even know that the British Empire is dying, still less did I know that it is a great deal better than the younger empires that are going to supplant it." (paragraph 2). We are reading this text 80 years later; so we are witnesses of what the "younger empires" have done or are doing nowadays.

Do some research in order to find either a piece of news or an essay about how one of the "younger empires" interferes in / tries to control / imposes itself upon another nation. (It may be a contemporary 21st century situation, or one that took place in the second half of the 20th century). Of course the younger empire won't necessarily bear that name; still, its practices may be considered imperial. This is what you should argue in an essay: present the country / ideology / economic practice etc. that imposes itself upon another, suggest that this practice resembles those of former empires, and then support this view with reference to reality / the news / etc. You may give your personal opinion, and briefly state how Orwell's statement has become (or not) true. Finally, you may suggest ways of intercultural dialogue between the two nations/cultures involved, which would be more fruitful than the situation you have analyzed.

The essay should be 3 pages long; Arial 11 or Times New Roman 12; 1.5 spaces between lines. Plase attach a photocopy or outprint of the piece of news or article you have used.

This assignment is due on Friday, May 22nd.
